From March 13 to April 19, 2025, discover Thomas Crausaz's exhibition "Valais noir : balade dystopique" at the Médiathèque Valais - Martigny.
This exhibition of illustrations by Thomas Crausaz takes visitors on a hike through the Valais in a dystopian future.
The illustrations play with Valais clichés, juxtaposing the beauty of its landscapes, history and traditions with brutalist architecture, a technological environment and a bleak future. The viewer encounters raccards, vineyards, dams, the Rhône, ski lifts and partially recognizable locations, such as Sion or Martigny.
With a certain dark humor, these hikes don’t appeal to viewers with an overtly ecological or political message, but reflect the concerns of our time about sustainable development in a region that will be particularly affected in the near future. The slightly antiquated rendering of the black-and-white images is reminiscent of old photographs, while suggesting an (in)certain future. They bridge the gap between past and future, questioning the viewer’s place in the present.
