Mithraeum

The only sanctuary of Mithra, Sun god originating from Iran, open to the public on Swiss soil.

It was discovered in 1993 on the occasion of the building of an apartment block. Thanks to Léonard Gianadda’s enthusiasm, this sanctuary has been completely excavated and most importantly conserved in situ. Innumerable objects were discovered, which, apart from its architecture, makes this monument one of the most documented in the Roman world: three stone altars, coins, bronze figurines related to the sacred image (Tauroctony), etc.
